The Rear Axle

The rear axle came in late May of 2004. I got ahold of a company in Lansing called K&L Driveline. They seemed to do a lot of work on commercial vehicles and OEM type applications, but you can tell the guys there, Bob and Jeff, like to do things in their spare time with high performance stuff.

So, after talking with Bob, I basically told him that I needed something that'd be able to hold up to ~850 horsepower, and between 800 and 1000 ft/lbs of torque, with a trans brake. My initial thought was that I'd end up with For 9 inch, or a Chevy 12-bolt. But, after talking with Bob, he came up with a perfect setup - a Chevy 10-bolt rear end stuffed with good parts. So, I gave Bob dimensions, ratios, and told him everything else I wanted, and what it had to do, and he went to town. I ended up with a very customized Chevy 10 bolt, delivered 6 weeks later.

What I ended up with was a Chevy 10 bolt, 42" hub-to-hub, with 1/2" wheel studs, Moser axles, Ford big bearings, a Moser spool, 4.56 gears, and a Moser rear diff cover/girdle. I was a little apprehensive about this setup, but Bob assured me that this axle would hold 1500 ft/lbs of torque before things inside started breaking. I hope he's right :-)
